A two-second distraction can double the risk of a car crash

There are many people who spend a great deal of time behind the wheel of an automobile. In fact, it can become an ingrained part of their daily routine. Unfortunately, it is easy to forget how important it is to keep your focus on the road and avoid succumbing to distractions.

The fact is, distractions abound, especially on the busy streets of New York City. There are some distractions that drivers are unable to control. These can include external distractions such as poor road conditions, bad weather and other motorists.

However, some of the most dangerous distractions are those that a driver has total control over. There is simply no excuse for a driver to allow personal distractions such as cell phones and other mobile devices to dominate his or her attention while driving.

The State of New York has very specific and thorough laws regarding the use of electronic devices while driving and with good reason. According to a report published by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, simply looking away from the road for two seconds or more will double the chances of being involved in a near-crash or crash.

As you likely know, road conditions can change in an instant. As such, distracted drivers pose a genuine menace to the other drivers, pedestrians and bicyclist with whom they share the road. The negligent acts of these drivers can cause accidents and leave victims seriously injured.

If you have been injured in a car accident caused by a distracted driver, you will likely need compensation to cover your medical expenses. You may even have to take time off from work and go through physical therapy as part of your recovery. If such is your case, you may want to have a New York personal injury attorney act on your behalf to help you get an amount of compensation that takes all of your expenses into account.
