In spite of new laws, texting and driving on the increase in NYC

By now, everyone should be aware that distracted driving is a dangerous practice. And just like most of the rest of the country, New York has laws that are intended to address the problem. Yet it seems that far too many citizens and visitors of our fair city have yet to receive that particular message. Or if they did get the message in the form of a text sent to their phones, they may have simply ignored it.

Recent statistics indicate that in spite of the measures taken to battle the problem, more people than ever are texting while behind the wheel. According to data that was released by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, the number of texting citations has skyrocketed from around 9,000 in 2011 to nearly 85,000 in 2015.

Over the years, Gov. Cuomo has been part of an effort to curtail texting while driving. The penalty for the infraction has been raised from two points up to five. And he also signed into law stricter penalties for younger or inexperienced drivers who could face year-long license revocation for texting offenses.

Texting while driving is always a bad idea, but in the traffic-heavy environment of New York City, it can greatly endanger others on the street. Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable when a driver runs a light or fails to yield due to being distracted.

Distracted drivers should be held accountable for their negligence behind the wheel. If you have been struck by a distracted driver, either while on foot or in an automobile, a New York City personal injury attorney could act on your behalf to get compensation for damages. Depending on the circumstances of your action, the attorney could pursue compensation from insurance companies or file a civil suit against the person or persons responsible.
