New York City faces a problem that few other cities in the country face: an abundance of bicyclists on the road. The addition of bicyclists to the constant city traffic can add another level of complexity, both from the legal perspective and driving perspective, to daily travel. Bicycle accidents can be very devastating and complicated. In instances where a bicyclist hits a pedestrian, there is employment liability to think about, and in instances where a bicyclist is struck by a vehicle, the damages can be catastrophic to the cyclist.
Many New York City restaurants employ bikers to deliver food, and in an effort to deliver the food quickly, bikers can sometimes be placed at risk. One delivery worker in particular was recently involved in a hit-and-run accident as he was heading southbound on Lexington Avenue. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene after striking the biker, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Of course by the nature of a collision involving a bicyclist and a larger vehicle, the bicyclist is almost guaranteed to come away with more serious injuries, even if he or she is wearing a helmet and observing all of the safety procedures. Missed wages due to inability to work and hospital bills to treat injuries will be added to the unfortunate bicyclist’s problems. While nothing can undo the damages inflicted upon bicyclists injured in accidents, their expenses can be mitigated with compensation granted by New York courts.
Any accident involving a bicyclist can be complicated, either due to employment liability or excessive injuries suffered. If you or a loved one has been injured in a bicycle accident, either by another bicycle or while on a bicycle, you may be entitled to compensation. In order to get the compensation that you deserve, it is highly advisable to seek strong legal counsel with experience handling bicycle accidents.
