Bicycle-pedestrian accidents in New York City

It is one thing to talk about bicycle accidents in New York City and how they threaten pedestrians going about their business in the city, but it is another to show just how real the threat is. A joint study between many different New York City Departments analyzed the fatalities and injuries associated with bicyclists over a 10 year period, and while much of the reports focus on bicyclists as victims, there is also a look at the effects of bicyclists on pedestrians.

Between pages 20 and 22 of the extensive report, it is mentioned that 11 pedestrians were killed in bicycle accidents between 1996 and 2005, with 73 percent of the fatalities occurring in Manhattan. One fatality a year may not seem like a lot, but keep in mind that bicycles are not particularly large nor fast vehicles, and they are thus not likely to cause fatalities even in pedestrian accidents. However, this does not mean that bicycles crashing into pedestrians do not cause serious injury.

If you are walking along the sidewalk or walking through central park and a biker clips you, there is a strong chance that you will be bruised and you may even be knocked down, which could lead to broken bones or a concussion. Any of these injuries could be life-altering at worst.

There are many bicyclists in New York City, and just like larger motor vehicle crashes, accidents happen. It is impossible to predict when and where a bicycle accident will occur. Also like larger motor vehicle crashes, these accidents can cause serious injury and result in unexpected medical bills or lost wages. A successful lawsuit could see you compensated for any injuries you suffer.
