Bicycle accidents are much like car accidents

New York City is no stranger to bicyclists or pedestrians. The excessive traffic and congestion on the busy streets of the Big Apple have caused many people to seek alternative transportation, and in some instances walking or biking are genuinely faster than driving. Alternatively, some people simply seek healthier or more eco-friendly ways to go about commuting. Whatever the reason, there are many people who ride bikes or walk around in New York.

Unfortunately, bikers and pedestrians sometimes run into each other in the worst way possible, resulting in serious injuries for one or both parties. There are many factors that might cause a pedestrian and a biker to collide, but it is important to determine the cause of the accident to find out who was at fault in the matter. Determining fault often allows the victim who was not at fault to be compensated for any injuries he or she may have suffered in the accident.

Pedestrians and bikers alike should know that bicyclists are beholden to the same rules of the road as larger vehicles such as cars and trucks. This is important because many times bicyclists attempt to use their small size and maneuverability to cut corners and shave time off their commute. Some bikers do not stop at all stop signs, for example, or ride the wrong way down a street because they believe that they will be able to avoid oncoming traffic.

In some cases, bikers attempt to avoid the roads altogether and simply ride along the sidewalks. However, sidewalks are reserved for the use of pedestrians, and if you are struck by a bicyclist while walking on a sidewalk, there is a good chance that you will be able to recover compensation for the injuries. If you have been involved in a bicycle accident, consider meeting with an attorney to learn more about your chances to recover compensation.
