What safety gear should I get for my bicycle?

On Behalf of | Sep 19, 2016 | Bicycle Accidents

Perhaps you have decided that the best way to traverse the streets of New York City is by bicycle. A bicycle is a great option for a number of reasons. For example, thanks to bike lanes, you can typically keep moving even when the motor vehicle traffic is at a standstill. Also, while traveling from here to there on your bike, you are getting a great workout.

But bicyclists have one decided disadvantage: they are extremely physically vulnerable. Any collision with a motor vehicle, even one moving slowly, can leave a cyclist seriously or even fatally injured. As such, it is important that you outfit your bike with the proper safety gear. The following are some accessories that could help keep you safe as your ride:

  • A mirror. You can choose a mirror that attaches to your handlebars or clips on your helmet. Either type will allow you to see the vehicles behind you, which gives you the chance to react appropriately as they approach.
  • A water bottle holder and water bottle. Riding, especially in hot weather, can cause you to become dehydrated. Having water close at hand can quench your thirst and help you avoid the symptoms of dehydration.
  • Front and rear lights. If you want to ride at night, you also want to be seen. Motorists will have a much easier time spotting you if you have lights on both ends of your bicycle.
  • A helmet. Of all the gear mentioned in this post, helmets are the most important. You want one that fits firmly so there is no space between your head and the helmet.

These are just a few items you may want to put on your shopping list to prepare your bike for city riding. Unfortunately, sometimes the precautions you take are not enough to prevent being struck by a negligent motorist.

And if you are injured in a bicycle-automobile accident, a New York personal injury attorney may be able to help you get appropriate compensation to cover your medical costs.
