Motorcycles: Driving the fine line between safety and tragedy

It's not easy to ride a motorcycle. Other drivers don't always see you, and they make it hazardous for you to be on the roads by not giving you enough space. It's a reality that motorcyclists can get seriously hurt in a crash. What's worse is that serious injuries are more likely for motorcyclists because of their limited protection against impacts.

As someone who rides regularly in New York, you need to know the best ways to stay safe. Here are a few tips that could help you be safer on the roads in your area.

1. Get the right bike for the job

The first thing to know is that a motorcycle without enough horsepower isn't the right tool for the job in the city. You need a motorcycle that is responsive and that can get up to speed quickly. Don't go overboard, though. Lighter bikes, for instance, aren't great for the city.

2. Perform routine maintenance

Make sure you follow through on routine maintenance scheduled for your motorcycle, particularly because you're using it in stop-and-go traffic. Check your gear, too. If you get into a crash and hit your helmet, for instance, you need to replace it immediately. You always want to use gear that is as sturdy and reliable as possible.

3. Brighten up your ride

Another thing you can do to stay safe is to buy a bright motorcycle or wear bright, reflective clothing. There's so much going on in the streets of NYC that you have to make yourself stand out. If you don't, you may find a wayward taxi trying to move into your lane.

4. Try to avoid busy times of the day

That's almost impossible in some parts of the city, but overall, if you can avoid the busiest routes and busiest times of day, you're already lowering the risk of getting into a crash. Riding during the day may also help, since it's easier for drivers to see you than it is at night.

These are a few tips that can help you stay safer in NYC. When you choose to ride a motorcycle, you're reducing congestion and making it easier for you to get to work or events, but it does put you at risk. Remember, good maintenance, bright motorcycle gear and the right motorcycle will make a difference when it comes to safety.
