Cyclists and car accidents

Many people living in New York and around the country are cyclists. While cycling is a popular sport and mode of transportation, it is not without its risks. In many areas, streets are primarily occupied by automobiles, which can pose a significant danger to those riding bicycles.

Recently, a cyclist was killed while riding in New York City. Activists became concerned as this was the 14th cyclist to be killed in the city in 2019. Mayor Bill DeBlasio has committed to taking action to ensure the safety of cyclists in the city.

The dangers to cyclists who travel on roads also occupied by motor vehicles are considerable. Cyclists are relatively unprotected against collisions with cars and trucks. In addition, many car and truck drivers are unfamiliar with appropriate safety skills needed when sharing the road with cyclists. As a result, drivers may be putting cyclists at risk.

One major concern is that motorists do not respect bicycle lanes and either park or drive in them. For their part, motorists have sometimes argued that cyclists themselves engage in risky behaviors. The mayor has asked the Department of Transportation to develop a new plan for cyclist safety that encourages all users of public roads to engage in safe behaviors.

Cyclists who have been injured in motor vehicle accidents may benefit from speaking with an experienced personal injury attorney. A lawyer may review the client's case and make recommendations regarding seeking compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages and other losses caused by a motor vehicle accident. In many cases, negotiations with a driver's insurance company may be sufficient, some cases might have to go to trial.
