Individuals with an interest in knowing which New York City roads have a reputation for frequent motor vehicle crashes can consult information compiled by the city government. Several reports collect information on collisions in and around the five boroughs.
Updated every month, the data provides an accurate look at what roadways might have a greater risk of seeing an accident.
A look at Manhattan intersections
New York City Police Department information from November 2022, shows the number of collisions for many intersections in Manhattan. The report also lists the number of people involved, injuries, deaths, vehicle type and contributing factors to the accident. When looked at closely, this data allows city residents to get a sense of road dangers in their communities.
For example, at the intersection of Murray Street and West Street, the report showed five crashes involving a total of 11 people. While no deaths occurred in these incidents, one crash did result in injuries to a motorist and a passenger. The remaining four accidents only resulted in property damage.
A look at contributing factors
One feature of the report shows contributing factors if known, that led to the accident. Driver inattention remains the most common reason cited in police reports. Other frequent reasons that cause a motor vehicle accident include the following:
- Improper or unsafe passing
- Failure to yield the right-of-way
- Driver inexperience
- Unsafe speed
- Following too closely
