Why should you not ignore a workplace hazard?

On Behalf of | Jul 11, 2023 | Workplace Accidents

You notice something amiss in the workplace and it might not seem like a big deal right now. However, ignoring a hazard can have detrimental consequences for you and those around you.

When you understand the importance of reporting concerns, you may have more of an incentive to speak up. Your diligence in reporting and requesting the removal of hazards can better protect everyone.

Hazards could jeopardize your safety

Depending on the industry you work in, a hazard could be anything from unguarded machinery to an improperly adjusted workspace. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, workplace hazards can also include the following:

  • Frayed cords
  • Workload demands
  • Mold
  • Vapors, gases and flammable materials
  • Confined spaces
  • Spills

Your vigilance in recognizing and reporting hazards can prevent an exposure spread from threatening more people.

Hazards can slow operations

Even if a hazard is not causing immediate harm, its presence could make people more cautious or nervous. This means it could slow operations and interfere with efficiency and effectiveness. Reporting a hazard and its subsequent removal can maintain workflow and productivity.

If you report a hazard and your employer does nothing to correct it or takes too much time to fix it, someone could end up hurt. A workplace accident that causes an injury because of negligence on the part of your employer can end in a lawsuit. You have the right to work in a place that is both safe and comfortable. If you do report hazards, your employer should communicate a solution to you in a timely manner.
