Dangerous times of day to drive in NYC

On Behalf of | Nov 7, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

When it comes to staying safe on the road, driving during certain times of the day can be particularly hazardous. Conditions such as poor visibility increase the risk of traffic incidents.

Understanding dangerous driving times can reduce your chances of a car accident.

Early morning rush hour

The hours between 6 and 9 a.m. can be perilous on the road. Many people are commuting to work or school, and the combination of heavy traffic and groggy drivers can lead to accidents. Distractions and time crunches increase the risk of morning rush hour accidents.

Late afternoon rush hour

The period from 3 to 6 p.m. can also be a high-risk time to drive. Fatigue and impatience tend to rise as people finish their workdays and head home. Congested roads and aggressive driving behaviors can make the afternoon commute dangerous.

Late evening through early morning

As the sun sets and darkness falls, driving becomes more hazardous. Between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., visibility decreases and more impaired drivers take to the road. Drunk driving accidents are common during these hours, so it is critical to exercise caution.

Weekends and holidays

Weekends, particularly Friday and Saturday nights, can be treacherous times to drive. Many people are out socializing, and alcohol consumption can lead to impaired driving. Holiday weekends, such as the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve, are notorious for a higher number of accidents.

According to Forbes, New York City had 100,508 auto accidents in 2022 alone, and 38% of these incidents resulted in a serious injury or fatality. Take appropriate precautions whenever you drive, especially during these dangerous times.
