Flagger safety is sometimes overlooked in roadway work zones across New York. Flaggers are the ones who control traffic flow in these zones, so it's important that they are seen by drivers and know what to do in case of emergencies. Otherwise, they risk being injured or dying. WorkZoneSafety.org states that there were 132 car crash fatalities in roadway work zones in 2017. The culprit in most of these cases was a speeding or aggressive driver.
Outdoor work in New York can be physically challenging and dangerous in the best of conditions. But in the winter months, those challenges are amplified by winter conditions, icy roads and accumulated snow. That's why the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has released a list of winter hazards that employees and employers should understand. Among the most serious threats is rooftop snow removal.
